Comment-tary

One of the most important parts to blogging is commenting. It is such a special and rewarding gift to a blogger, when they look on the blog and see that someone has commented on their blog post.

I know that it makes me feel good, to see positive comments on my blog posts. But, in the short period of time, I’ve been reading blogs and comments, and there is one thing that strikes me as a little too bold.

When people comment on other people’s blogs and are just a little bit too honest. Like for instance, I once read a comment that someone wrote, “I want to like your blog a lot more than I do!” I read that comment and my jaw dropped to the floor! Now, I am sure that there have been for more shocking comments written on blogs than that. But, I just didn’t like that comment. Here’s how I feel about commenting.

Blogs are like people’s homes. In fact, they are a lot like people’s homes. Many people share family stories, photos and much more about family on their blogs. Anyway, when people create a blog and they are excited about it, they begin to search for friends. And then, they want to invite them into their new ‘home’. When you invite people into your home, you expect them to show respect. You expect them to show kindness and to treat you as they’d like to be treated, if they were having you over in their home. Well, someone disrespects your home or your decor, or give one of those famous backhand compliments/insults to your artwork, (Don’t you just love those backhand compliments? Yeah, those are my favorite. *Sarcasm*) then you’ll feel bad. You don’t want people to be rude.

Well, I feel that a blog is the exact same way. Blogs are created by the bloggers, that want to share their opinions and lives with people. But, when you invite people to come and see the blog and they are too honest, it hurts. It is not something that you can just overlook. And that’s why I am always very cautious about commenting.

Whenever I comment on people’s blogs, I am always encouraging and as I read the posts, I look for something to relate to and that helps me to write something good to blogger, that much quicker. There have been many posts, that seems like it was a conversation. Honest, upfront and real. That’s one of the things that I love most about blogging.

To me, blogging is the real deal. And I take it very seriously. It is not something that I take for granted and it is something that means a lot to me. And I hate seeing people that don’t get blogging, take it for granted or insult it. If people don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say it at all. Well, same goes for commenting. I feel it’s important to give your best to other bloggers. But, everybody started somewhere and everybody deals with writers’ block. So, every blogger has a voice. It’s just how you decide to use it, is all.

How do you feel about commenting? What do you do if/when someone writes something negative or rude on your blog posts? How do you handle it?

  1. I am in total agreement with you on this. I think sometimes people just shut down their common sense when they’re online – it is easy to hide behind an icon and screen name and then let all manner of crap fly. I have a creative writing blog and frequent other writing blogs – if I see something that could use a little work, I try to make constructive critiques and point out at least one thing I like about the work. As for my blog, I haven’t gotten any negative comments, but if I did I’d just delete them and move on. No use starting a conflict over something that I do for fun and relaxation.

    1. LOL! I love this comment! Thank you so much for it! I like how you’d handle the situation. Very honest!

    1. Yes, it does! It makes us as bloggers feel good, to see that people are enjoying what you write.
