First Lady Michelle Obama is currently visiting Japan. Partnering with them to launch the “Let Girls Learn” initiative. Encouraging countries to support the scholastic endeavors of our girls. Upon listening to the importance of this initiative, I was unaware of a staggering number, dealing with this subject.

There are 62 MILLION Girls around the world that are not in School! 62 MILLION!!!! Can you believe it?!!! I was shocked by this! I just can’t believe that there are that many young ladies that want to go to school and they are being prohibited and denied the opportunities! If they attempt to go to school, many of them are being beaten, mercilessly. Many of them are being forced into marriage and being forced to become Mothers, before they themselves are adults.

And it’s not changing as fast as it should. It is beyond sad that this is happening in our world. But, you know an approach that my mind took to this? The fact that there are young girls right here in America, that has no interest in going to school! If you ask some of them what they are going to do after graduating from High School, so many of them will respond with, “I’m ’bout making that paper!” Referring to make money! Well, what they don’t understand, is that in most cases Employers are looking for people that have a higher education, to work for them! Trust me, I know!

Being active in the job hunt, it’s nothing for me to look on a job board and see an ad by an Employer that is looking for employees with Masters and Bachelors degrees. There are so many people that don’t understand the power that high education has. And I couldn’t help but wonder. If and When these girls from around the world comes to America and they find out that there are girls here that have the option of going to school, but opt out?! I can’t help but think, that they would be absolutely appalled by it! Imagine it like this. Let’s say that we lived in a world where, here in America, Blogging was banned. And we heard all about blogging and how businesses and careers can get started from blogs. What if we were told in a different country that we couldn’t have access to computers, cameras or even a pen and paper? We weren’t even given the permission to write down a thought, let alone organize a post. How would you feel?

Now, I am not comparing the importance of education to blogging. Both are important. But, we all know that Education is the key to the door of Opportunities. But, I was just using blogging as an example. We live in a country, where we have the freedom to do whatever we want and however we want to. But, I think that sometimes we take our privileges for granted. Sometimes, I think that we take our freedom for granted. Think about the voting factors. Our foremothers and forefathers fought, so that we would have the right to vote. And think of how many of us, don’t vote? And many of us, are registered. But, we just won’t do it.

So, when I think of these girls around the world that want to do this and they can’t, it just saddens me. Because I know that they’d love to go to school and I know that they would excel if given the opportunity. I know many of them, have some of the greatest and best ideas. Ideas that would change our world and could make it a much better place! I am sure that it is possible for us to change these dynamics, but it’s up to us to help make that change.

Knowing this, really makes me passionate about changing this. I want to do what I can to bring awareness to people and to help them understand them importance of spreading this information. The more people that we have aware of this factor and crisis, the more we all can do to help. It’s going to take all of us.

One girl at a Time!

My Grandparents’ Birthday Month

On today, I want to share the birthday month of two of favorite people. My grandparents. My Grandfather’s birthday was on the fourth and my Grandmother’s Birthday was today. These flowers above, were something that I put together, in their honor.

My Mama wanted to put flowers in the church and so, I went out looking for something to buy. I went to the store and I looked at everything that I possibly could.

Mom wanted Yellow! That’s all she wanted. She wasn’t particular about what type of flower they were, she just wanted them to have Yellow. So, when I went looking, I found some things that were good, but it didn’t really click for me. I went to store after store, just trying to find the perfect thing.

My initial intent was to make something. But, I didn’t think that I could make something good enough, to put in the church. But, after much deliberation and I got tired of looking, I just decided to try my hand at putting something together.

The thing is, that ended up being much simpler. I find these yellow roses and they were a perfect fit! I am happy, because I got the color for them that Mom wanted and I got to save some money, by making them.  And they looked really good. I am very happy that they looked so good. I couldn’t be more pleased. And the best part? Mom was thrilled! I got some compliments on them and I am really glad that I tapped into the creativity that my Grandmother taught and trusted myself and the creativity! It felt like she was guiding me, telling what to do and how it should look. I thank God for her and for my Grandfather!

I hope that they were looking down and were pleased.

We love them and miss them so much.

Time to start something New!

Well, as I have said before, that if I didn’t find a job that I would have to create business for myself.

So, now I am going to creating my own business. I was looking into a Virtual Assistance business a couple of years ago and I was really looking forward to it. But, what I didn’t know that I could start my own VA business. I became intrigued by this and I decided to look into it further.

Now, I am developing this business and I am excited about it. I think that it will work out, but I approaching this cautiously. I know myself and I get excited really easily. And that can be kryptonite! So, that’s why I am being very cautious about this. I don’t want to make any careless mistakes. Now, I know that I can’t avoid making mistakes, but stupid, careless ones, I can try my hardest not to.

So, in case you are not familiar with what a Virtual Assistant is, here’s the skinny. A Virtual Assistant is just like any assistant that you might have on a staff. How you would instruct an assistant to make reservations, type letters, make plans for you and your family, it’s the same basic thing. Except, your clients will reach you via Email, Skype, Phone, etc. They will tell you some things that they need from you and it is up to you to deliver on those services. Now, there are a lot of people that are VA’s , but they work with an actual agency.  But, for those you have to pay a monthly fee.  That was really an option for me, because I wasn’t working and I didn’t have the money for a monthly fee. So, I am hopeful that this will work out. I will keep you posted on my progress!

Black History ABC’s

This month, is the month when people from all over the world celebrate Black History.

The people that have helped shaped our world and the way that they have changed the world! The people that there are to celebrate are far too numerous to name. But, this month always reminds me of something that I did some time ago.

When I was eleven years old, I wrote this piece called ‘Black History ABC’s’. The idea behind this piece was to highlight different words that corresponds with each letter of the Alphabet and how all of these words in some way, may have inspired, motivated and explained these remarkable people and what there goals were. So, there are many more ways to describe the hardships, challenges and everything that they went through.

When I think now about the Black History ABC’s, I think about a whole new aspect to it. I think about this. Naming people in the Black History, using the same aspect. Let’s see.

If could write your own Black History ABC’s, what would it look like?

If you see people on this list, that you’ve never known, please feel free to look them up. It’s important that all races learn about each other and celebrate one another’s heritages and histories. Let us look up more about Black People and what they’ve contributed to us. Because believe me, there are so many Black People that we don’t know about, in the way we should. We don’t and we should So, let’s educate ourselves and our world. Because Black History is one month a year, but the history is being made over and over again. All the Time.
