Aaah, The Job Hunt. It’s a Job!

Everyone that is out there on the job hunt, completely understands one simple thing. Looking for a job, is indeed a job. It is very challenging out there for the employed to find work in today’s market.

A perfect example. I have been looking for work for a long time. And trust me, it most definitely has been a challenging road. It has been frustrating, exhausting and seemingly, never ending.  Every chance that I’ve gotten , I have been job hunting. I am always looking, either traveling or looking online. Nothing yet. But, job hunting tests you. It tests you mentally, it tests your faith. I pray and I pray. I know that the Lord has something great in store for me, I am just hopeful that I will start work soon.

See, everyone that is looking for work, I am sure that all of us want to hold up a sign that says, “And all that we want, is a job! A paying job!” Now I ask you, is that too much to ask? For some, it just might be. But, the fact is, people want to earn their keep. Many people don’t want a handout, they just want an honest paycheck. Fortunately, more opportunities are opening up and things are slowly turning around. But, trust me when I tell you, When everybody finally gets employed, boy, What a Happy time that’s going to be? You’ll probably see people, at least wanting to have a party. But, we’ll be so happy to have work, we can just party when we retire!

But for write now, I will just blog. The funny thing is, all I’ve ever wanted to do what was work for someone else. But, it seems that the work that I’m putting into my blog and others like my blog, seems to be growing faster than my job hunt.

Isn’t that interesting?

The work of a Blogger, is never done! (nor easy!)

One of the main things that you must understand as a blogger, is that it all starts with good content. You have to have good content  in order to get readers. That is the start, the during and the after. Regardless of what the content is about. Whether it’s about Fashion, Food, Photography, Politics or just writing about your daily life. You need to have something to say. You need to contribute something to the blogging world. Then of course, it’s about getting the message out there.

It is so important to know how promote your blog. The first thing that I feel it’s about, is figuring what is the voice of your blog. What do you want to talk about? How do you want to bring your message across to your readers? Once you understand your message and how you want to describe it to people, then you will know how to properly promote it. You have to always remember that you are the one that has the power of you blog, in the palm of your hand. Literally. You determine how you want it to look, what it’s path will be, etc. No can promote your blog like you can. Because, it’s your work. It is your point of view. These are words that has come straight from your heart, soul and mind. These are words, are not just words. But, they are a part of you. So, it’s incredibly important to understand where it fits and how it should be nurtured.

Think of your blog as your child. Whether you have a child or not, your blog is a part of you. You created it, you are delivering your work to the world, and it is up to raise it right. You are responsible for it. So make sure that you treat it a such.

One of the things that I’ve learned so far as a blogger, is waiting takes you out of the game! It simply does not pay to wait. See, blogging is one of those things where if you wait too long to blog, you can lose serious momentum, when you’re starting out. You need to work on your blog, even when you’re not in front of the computer. Often times when I’m watching TV, I’ll be thinking, ‘ What am I going to blog about today?’ You should always be thinking about ways to make your blog better. Now of course, social media plays a major role in this. If you’re going to blog, you’ve got to be socially active. You’ve got to get into Facebook, Twitter, Bloglovin, and every other good source that you can get into to promote your blog. You’ve got to use those sources, after each blog post.

Now at first, I got involved with BlogHer. That is where I wrote my first blog and I love BloghHer! I love that I found them, (on an ad on Ree Drummond’s blog, of course! I mean, I absoulutely adore her!). Anyway, I was surprised at how much work it takes to be a blogger. It takes a lot of discipline and dedication. But, if you love what you’re doing, then it really doesn’t feel like work. You’re honored to do it.  Now, so many people that blog, are writers and authors. And some, have become authors since starting their blogs. It’s because of the traffic and popularity that their blog has generated. That too, is a dream of bloggers. You should want your work to spread to other  venues. You should want to grow as a writer. And blogs gives us the platform to do that with. Each time we blog, we should be growing. We should be challenging ourselves and coming up with new ideas. From a personal standpoint, blogging challenges me. This is the first time, when I’ve created something from scratch that I am solely responsible for. That is new and exciting! But, it makes me a little nervous from time to time.

Another thing about blogging, is the fact that it helps to read other blogs. When you read other people’s blogs, it can inspire you. You can look at everything from content to photography to design. There is a large world of blogs out there and is growing in leaps and bounds everyday. For instance, I’m sitting here blogging and it’s almost one ‘o’ clock in the morning. But, I know for a fact that I’m not the only doing that right now. As a matter a fact, I am sure that there are people that are creating their blog right now! So, read! Read, Read, and Read some more. Google the term, ‘Blog’ and see how many of the pop up. You’ll see everything from websites offering guidelines and outlines on how to start a blog, to blogs that people own, which are already up and running. There is so much to check out. So, the next time you might be tempted to complain that you don’t have anything to do, grab your laptop, iPad, or go to your desktop and look up ‘blogs’ and see what’s out there. Who knows? You might find a empty space in the blogging world that you know how to fill.

Blogging is incredibly exciting and I could go on and on about it. And I will, trust me. But, for right now, this is kind of an opener to what else I want to talk about. And if you get nothing out anything that I wrote, please pay attention to this. Blogging is not easy. It takes work, inspiration, dedication, and you’ve got to willing to be a little uncomfortable in order to get better. We as bloggers, we want people to read our work. We want really readership. But, just know that it takes a lot of work to get there. There will be days when you don’t have the readership that you want. But, take those days and let them make you strive for more. Let them make you hungry to get better. Let them make you want to work more, want to write more. But most importantly, write about things that you are passionate about. Write about things that you believe in. Write about things that are important to you. And if you’d like to write about things that are important to our world, then please feel free.

Whatever you want to write about, especially if you don’t see it out there, by no means should you wait and see if someone else will write about it. Get out there and write about it yourself.

Be a Life Do-it- Yourselfer!

Happy Blogging, everyone!

Tasha Gwartney – Author : New Releases

Hello Everybody!

I hope that all of you are doing well and are having a great day.

On my Facebook page, (http://www.facebook.com/vsblogs), I love bringing the work of others to light. I love it when people ask me to post about their books, their blogs and all of the creative things that people love doing. It makes me very happy, when just doing something that is so simple, can help make people happy. Because all of  us, as bloggers, writers, and those that are authors, understand better than anyone that often times, we’ve got to be our own cheerleaders. We’ve got to have our backs, when we don’t have anyone else to lean on. Yes, we have our families and they are supportive of us, in our creativity and doing what we feel passionate about. But, it’s like something that I once heard Ree Drummond say, ‘If you are not a blogger, then you really can’t understand what bloggers go through!’ A very true statement. So today, I want to present a good friend of mine, Tasha Gwartney.

For Grandpa

Today, is my Grandfather’s birthday. If he’d lived to this year, he would’ve been Eighty Years old!

My Grandfather passed 12 years and I really miss him. He taught me so many things. He helped me to be smarter and helped to see people for what they really are. And I am now, putting those lessons into closer and more effective action.

My parents got a divorce, when I was really young. And we moved in with my Grandparents when my Grandfather got sick. Even I the wheelchair, he still took it upon himself to take on the ‘Father’ role. And he didn’t have to do that. He was already my grandfather and an incredible one at that. He didn’t have to take both roles, especially in his condition. But, he did. And even though my actual father was still alive, I wasn’t close to him. At All. We never had relationship.

My Grandfather didn’t have any sons. He had two daughters. One, from a previous relationship and my Mom, with Grandma. So, I was the closet thing that he had to a son. I was a tomboy and I’d rather play with cars and watch sports, than have tea parties and play with dolls. So, whenever the game was on, I would be in his room, which doubled as a den. Football, Basketball, Golf, you name it, it had our attention. This was a fun activity for us and grew up, in that room. I learned so many life lessons in that room.

Grandpa played sports when he was younger. He played Football, Basketball and  Baseball. As a matter of fact, he was so good at Football, that he had the opportunity to go pro! But, he said that he didn’t want to leave my Grandmother! Wow! What a Romantic thing to do. But, my mother had other ideas. Jokingly, Mom told him, upon learning this, “You mean to say that you could’ve been rich and you didn’t take the it because you wanted to stay here with Mother? And he simply replied, ‘Yes’. Mom said, you could’ve taken her with you! Instead, I’m here working so hard to take care of all four of us. “You Owe me Money!” We all laughed at her, but, by the look on her face, she really wasn’t kidding!

His former teammates and best buddies, would come over and talk with him. But, before they’d arrive, they’d let him know they were coming. And when I heard about it, I would ask him, if I could stay in the room and listen in. I found their conversations fascinating and I knew that I could learn a lot from those men. I would always be happy when he said  yes. But, he’d always give me a warning. “You can stay in the room, but, if we start talking about something that we don’t want you to hear, then I’ll tell you to leave.” Then, the session began. The talking, the laughter, the advice, it was  like a course of study that no school anywhere could offer.

Once, one of his friends called me into the room and he said that he had some advice for me. So, I stood there and I listened to him. he told, “When we were young men, we did what we were supposed to do. We played sports, got our education and then, we focused more on the opposite Sex. So, I give that same advice to you, young lady. Stay focus, do what you’re supposed to do, get your education and then and only then, should you focus on the Opposite Sex.”

Now mind you, I was only about eight or nine at the time. I wasn’t even thinking about boys. Nor did I really know what Opposite sex mean. So, I was like, ‘Yes Sir.’ But, I didn’t really understand until later.

I appreciate their advice and love them for it. And I appreciate and love my Grandfather so much. He did so much for me and I am so grateful to him for everything! I love you Grandpa!!!

The Oscars: What the movies taught us this past year

As we all saw this year, there was an abundance of amazing films. Brilliant stories, Deep meanings and Epic performances by some of the best actors, actresses, writers, directors and producers in the world. We saw an incredible awards how last night.

We saw winners like, Lupita for Best Supporting Actress, Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor, Cate Blanchett for Best Lead Actress and Matther Mcconaughey for Best Lead Actor. “Gravity left with 7 wins out of there ten nominations, tied with “American Hustle” in nominations. And “12 Years a Slave” took home the top honor of Best Motion Picture. And of course, Ellen did not disappoint. She was a terrific host that did what she do best. Make people laugh.  They even had a pizza party. During the Oscars. Took a Major selfies with Brad, Angelina, Meryl, Julia, Jared, Jennifer, Bradley, Lupita, Channing and many others. It was an outstanding night and everyone had a blast.

But, I want I also want to highlight was the brilliant meanings of some of these movies. We saw a variety of bold and honest films. Films, whose messages could not be silenced. The films that were shown this year, were stellar to say the least. And each one of them, spoke to me.

There’s no way that I could possibly highlight everything in this post that spoke to me, but I would like to bring a moment of your attention, to my outlook on “12 Years a Slave”. It’s story, it’s statement and the changes that have occurred since those times.

“12 Years a Slave, tells the story about a man named Solomon. Named after the most wise man in the Bible. It shows his journey from being a freed man to being a slave. It shows us the miserable horror that they endured. It shows us hoe much they had to work for everything that earned. They were treated like garbage. No, actually, I think that in those days, garbage was treated better than slaves. We saw the way these people fought in order to be treated with respect. Taking us back to our roots and to our heritage. Letting us know, to never forget where we come from and to always remember the struggle. To past along this history to future generations. you know, this subject reminds me of something that I was heard the President say. He said, that kids today,  don’t look at race the same way that they, themselves were taught. He said, ‘When his daughters go over to their friends’ houses, they don’t see race or anything like that. They just see their friend!” And you know, I think that is how it should be. Period. I completely agree with him. See, my Mom grew up in the era of all black and all white kids. She has told me stories about when the public schools became integrated. When the races merged and attended one school. See, people like my Mom, can tell us stories about these times and it has changed the scope of our world. But, us? No, we can’t tell stories like that about our own lives. Because many of us, are close friends, pretty much like family, with other races. Many people, have families filled with people from walks of life and from all over the world.

We’re seeing many of our own generations, having interracial relationships, marriages and families. Now, of course, a lot of this has been going on for a very, very long time. But, all those many years ago, like during slavery times and after, there were interracial relationships and affairs going on. But, it was done quietly. no one could know, because it was so incredibly taboo. Now, we’re seeing interracial relationships shared and loved all over the world. And especially on TV. I mean, look at Scandal! Isn’t that a HOT Show? (By the way, I had to capitalize the word Hot, because it just is!) Olivia and Fitz, or Olitz, as they’re known all over the internet, and especially Youtube.  We saw something special growing between John Reese and Joss Carter on Person of Interest. And I could go on and on. And I will.

But, for now, I just want to say that  I really enjoyed the Oscars and I am so incredibly proud of the films, the actors and actresses, the writers, the producers, directors and crews of all of these amazing films. It was outstanding and everyone should be really proud of themselves.

Personally, I didn’t see losers. Everyone was a winner to me!!!

Why does being Single bother me?

Being single has never bothered me before. I have always been happy to be by myself. It gave me time to do what I wanted, which was study and dream about what I become someday. I have always been an incredibly ambitious person and I was really able to nurture that and figure out things that helps me to develop into what I want to be. It has been fun and it still is. But, for some reason, being single bothers me a little now.

I don’t know what happened. See, I’m Twenty Five and I’ve never been on a date before! I ‘ve never even been asked out. So, I guess that answers my own question now, doesn’t it? But until recently, it didn’t bother me. I’d see couples and I’d think, ‘Awww! They’re happy!’ Or ‘They’re a nice looking couple!’ Especially if it were older couples, they are just some of the cutest couples there is. And I am in no way a romantic. My Mom’s a romantic and so were my Grandparents. But, I missed that gene. But, wanting to have a boyfriend, wasn’t top of my list.

Now, here I am. In here, cleaning, blogging, thinking about all of the things that I need to do, including my hair. Planning on what I need to do tonight, study for my next exam. And suddenly, I’m watching Youtube. I’m listening to all different types of music, I am watching movie scenes and looking on Facebook. I see a lot of people that I know on there, in relationships. Or they are single and having fun. But, not me.

Now, I know that I need to give myself time. I just lost my grandmother about three weeks ago, I don’t want to cling onto someone, trying to ease some kind feeling that I’m having. I don’t want to attempt to fill voids with a person that could only be temporary. So, that’s why I’ve decided to blog. If I can’t do anything about this right now, the least I can do, is get it off me.

I know that relationships are far, far from easy. I am not looking a relationship to be easy. But, I’m not looking for unnecessary drama, either. Or any kind of drama, for that matter. I am hopeful that the right guy will come along. I am not the thinnest girl in the world, nor am I the prettiest. I am just a simple black girl that loves to read and cook and help others. I am hopeful that I will find my good match. I am not looking for perfect, because I am not perfect. But, when I do find the right guy, I want to have an instinct. And instinct that tells me, he’s the one. That lets me know, that I am not wasting my time. That I am not, making a huge mistake. I am hoping. I am praying.

And I know God hears me.

A Young Woman, A New Business

As a blogger and a young woman with ambition, it is kind of frustrating to be unemployed. And no, I don’t blame Washington for it. To me, it’s not Washington’s responsibility to hire people. Washington is not the running businesses and in charge of the day to day operations of companies. Those are the responsibilities of the CEOs and Managers. Washington is not flying down to look over resumes and pick whom they think would most suitable for the job. It is not Washington’s responsibility to fix it. It is the job of those that works in the offices everyday to know what they need in employees and for them to hire the most suitable candidates.

Now, honestly one of the reasons why many qualified folks aren’t getting hired, is because of “Favortism” Those people that know someone who is looking for a job, but are not capable of doing it. They are the ones that did a favor for the manager or is a friend of a friend and they have no clue on how to carry themselves, let alone work for a company.  What people that do this don’t realize, is they are compromising the integrity of their company. Let’s say you have a boutique and you hire someone based on the fact that you know them. And you need a person to run the cash register. Typically for that job, you need someone courteous, prompt, neat and good at math. You need someone that can do this job well, because chances are, this is the first person that your customers will see. So, that person needs to be able to make a good first impression, so that people will feel comfortable shopping with you.

But, if that person can’t count, don’t like to dress well, hates fashion and is hateful, hiring them is a horrible idea! You can’t risk your business for this person, hinged on the fact that you know them. But, unfortunately people are more willing to put their friends above good decisions. Well, this is something that has been going since the beginning of time. This is something that many qualified employees are dealing with. Something that people that has the education and tenacity, people with drive and determination are facing.

Termination, before even getting the job. This is a frustration that I have been facing for some time now and it’s indeed hard to explain it to some people. Some people say that I am picky. Some people say that I must be comfortable with being unemployed or that I just don’t want to work. But, that could not be a bigger lie!

I want to work and I am excited about joining the workforce. But, all the while we were taking care of Grandmother, I would be getting out looking for work. Locally and out of town. I would be trying my best to do what I could to be employed. Unfortunately, to no avail. And I began thinking. Here I am looking for a job, driving around from one place to another and not getting hired. Not to mention, I burning gas in this car and not getting hired so that I can get paid to replace it! These are moments when you sit in your car and you’re praying. You’re not just praying, you’re talking to God. You talking to him like a passenger in your car. And he is there with you, so he is your passenger. But, how frustrated you get, from time to time, you need him to be your driver as well.

I have not had a job before and trust me, I am seriously crazy far from having an abundance of money or anything. When I was a teenager, I didn’t have my driver’s license. I didn’t get my driver’s license until I was 23! So, working at a fast food joint then, was out of the question. Sometimes, they want you to work late nights and my Mom worked the twelve hour shift. From 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. So, my Mom and Grandparents didn’t feel comfortable with me walking home, alone and in the dark that late at night. And my Grandparents didn’t drive nor did they ever have a driver’s license. Either of them.  So, that wouldn’t work. And when it was time for me to go to college and I was going to work, My Grandmother got ill and she couldn’t be left alone. So, I decided to get enrolled in an online school and study there. And I loved it. Still do. In the recent couple of years, I have been looking for a job, hard. And nothing has turned up. The last time Grandma was in the hospital, I came home (because each time she was in the hospital, Mom and I stayed with her day and night. We never slept at home), and I printed up a little resume, (basically my educational background, ambitions and my current status of taking care of my Grandmother) and I pounded the pavement. I got out and I walked. I walked and walked. I went to so many places looking for work and as usual, I got the same things said to me. “I’m sorry, we’re not hiring.” Oh,  I’m sorry. We just filled our last position.” Or my personal favorite, “I don’t know if we’re hiring. Log onto our website and see if there are any positions open!” I got that last so many times, I should’ve gotten it printed on a T-Shirt! It got really old. Emphasis on ‘Old’. But, I just kept at it. And the funny thing is, sometimes when I went looking for a job, I didn’t even get a sorry. All I got was, the last line. ‘Look Online! Look Online!’

I was wondering, ‘Am I doing something wrong?’ But, can I share with you my favorite part of it all? Please? Okay.

My favorite part of it all is, when you go to a place that you frequently visit, (i.e. The grocery store or local office) and they say we’re not hiring right now. But, every time you go in there throughout the course of a month or so, all you see is new people! And I am thinking to myself, Am I missing something here? You’re not hiring, right? Then, where did all of these new people come from? That was so frustrating at first and now, it’s just funny. It is! It makes me laugh. Because you know if you go to a store and you go there pretty much all the time, you’re going to notice some new people. Now, let’s face it. Nobody’s that dense. You are going to notice if somebody’s new there. Or how about if you work at a place and there’s people working right next to you. Maybe a desk or something. And you now that they weren’t there a week ago. Heck, they weren’t even there yesterday. But, they are here today. Something should trigger in your mind and say, ‘Yes, we’re hiring!” At least we ought to be, Because, this girl wasn’t here yesterday!

Okay, well, maybe you can’t say that last part, but you can think it.

So, that’s why I’ve decided to bite down on the bullet and work for myself. I have decided to become self-employed and pray to God that I can succeed. And there are so many people that are in the same boat. So many people have left paying jobs, to work online. It’s amazing to me, but that’s the way it is.

I was scared of being self-employed. But now, I am comfortable with it. I am now eagerly looking forward to the challenge of working for myself and developing my own business. It is daunting and thrilling at the same time. But, I know that God has me on this path for a reason. So, I will be obedient and listen.

Hey, who knows where this could lead? But, I’ll tell you one thing. I am far to excited about my work , my future and my life to turn back now!
