Tess Munster: Fashion’s New Cover Girl

Today marks a big day for Fashion and an even greater step for us as plus size Women.

Tess Munster, a model and the woman behind the infamous hashtag, #effyourbeautystandards, has made history. She is the first size Twenty-two model to signed to a major Modeling agency!

Usually, we know that this is reserved for smaller models. Even if a woman is a plus size model, she is not a size Twenty-two. But, I am definitely proud of this progress that is being made. Tess has been modeling for some time now and she has been gaining major success through online magazines and social media. And when major industries and agencies see a person that is not afraid to be herself, then that really stands out.

It says that this person is confident and well aware of who they are. They get the odds and that they are stacked against them. No one has to tell us that it is hard for us to be full figured in this world. Even though that has been progress, there is still a lot of work to be done. I remember years ago, the model named Emme. The first full figured model that I had seen. She is lovely and most importantly, Confident. She knew just how to pose for the camera and encourage the women that bought the magazines.

Then, BBW was a big magazine for Black women. “Big Black Woman” was a fascinating magazine that was created in the nineties. It was a magazine that was definitely ahead of it’s time, but necessary for the times. And I wish that it was still around.  Mom would buy these magazines and I remember what it was like to look at them.

When I saw those photos, I didn’t see women that were ashamed of their size. I didn’t see women that worried about what other people thought about. I saw women that knew they looked great. They had the beauty, the success, the personality and what was the best thing? They were clearly unapologetic for it!

And that to me was great. To this day, I am in love with the concept! I think that all women should feel beautiful and all women should be unapologetic for their beauty. Whether they feel that they are too tall, too short, whatever the case may be. Freckles, Moles, Curly Hair, Long or short hair. No matter what we look like, we are all special and amazing in our own ways.

I am proud of us. Who we are. The businesses that we create, the families that we care for, the ways that we style ourselves. The way that we inspire generations, the way that we motivate others, the way that we build nations.

We are Power! We are Outstanding! There is nothing that we can’t do!

Congratulations to all of the remarkable Women that excelling! From Viola Davis, (Best Actress in a Drama Series) and Uzo Aduba, (Best Actress in a Comedy Series)  who made history last night by being the first two Black women to win in both leading actress categories, in the same night!

Just Amazing!!!
